Domain names

There are 2 approaches for selecting your domain name. No matter which approach you choose, you need to brainstorm all the possible names or keywords that you could possibly use then check them one by one at a Registrar, to see which ones may be still available. Now, you need to select and register a domain name; which will be the business identity and address, by which your customer will find you on the internet.

The Brand Name Approach:

Use these guidelines to help you in selecting the best domain name for you business. In the brand name approach you will first select a name that is short, memorable and easy to spell, that your customers can easily type, to get to your site correctly.

  • What emotional bond does the name create with the target market?
  • How unique is the name?
  • How memorable is the name?
  • What does the name really convey to consumers?
  • What imagery does it evoke?
  • How easy is the name to pronounce?
  • How well does the new name fit my products or services?
  • Does it use the imageries that people value the most, such as Love, Trust, Respect, Preference, Value, and Understanding?

The SEO Approach:

In the SEO approach you first search in WordTracker. You may ask yourself "Why not have 2 domain names of both approaches pointing at the same site? Be cautious that search engines may look at this as spamming, and demote or ban your domain names. If you do have multiple domain names, make sure that each domain name has its own unique content. As an alternative, you can set up a welcome page (website) using the "SEO" domain, and link the "Enter Site" button to your "Brand Name" domain. Then choose the ones that are most appropriate for your business and check for their availability. If the website SEO strategy is executed properly, then in the long run, the domain will have an additional advantage (as it is one of the factors in Google rankings). The resulting domain name is often a long, separated name with dashes; and it is therefore hard to remember the exact spelling. However, this method doesn't really help you, because search engines such as Google, gives a low ranking, to a one-page website.
